The cello is capable of producing hauntingly, beautiful sounds or a spirited lovely march. However, as with some other string instruments, cellos suffer from a sound that is denoted as the "Wolf-tone." A wavering, howling sound that seems as if two notes are being played instead of one. This site is tobe used to help explain the science behind the wolf tone.
Cellist know that wolf tone eliminators exist, but what we want to know is why it happens in the first place. If you have never heard a wolf tone, take a listen here. It's not the best presentation of the wolf tone, but if you would like more examples please download Audacity and listen to my files here.
Have fun learning about the science behind this mysterious noise!
